Niji 7 Character Consistency: Key Art, Not the Edit Model

After the V8 Edit Model shipped, it is tempting to paste “four references instead of --cref” onto anime jobs. Niji 7 character consistency is not that path. Official Character Reference lists Midjourney and Niji version 6. The Edit Model update and Version article place the editor on V8.X. To hold one face on Niji 7, keep a key-art identity block plus --sref. Do not merge it with the V8 Edit Model guide in a single prompt.

Why Niji 7 should not copy the V8 Edit Model workflow

The official doors are not the same job:

Omni Reference is Midjourney version 7 only, not Niji 7. Dragging V8 editor habits onto --niji 7 is using a photoreal edit manual on cel-shaded key art. Model line, reference type, and prompt sensitivity all differ.

Niji 7 character consistency starts with a frozen key-art block

Niji 7 follows wording closely. Face drift is usually rewritten identity, not a missing reference file. One identity block at key art; every later panel copies it.

Identity block (do not edit these four traits later):

Four checks only: hair, eyes, collar, signature accessory. If those move, --sref will not bring the same person back. Drop DSLR / photorealistic while you lock identity.

—sref owns the look, not a fake —cref

--sref holds line weight, palette, and shadow shapes—not a facial ID. Official style reference was always separate from character reference; V8 Edit Model still asks for extra prompt direction with moodboards / srefs. On Niji 7, split the jobs:

• Identity sentences = who
• --sref + --sw = the drawing style
• Optional --p = your personalization (overall taste, not one face)

If the face drifts, check whether the identity block was rewritten, then simplify the scene. Do not add a “looks like her” image as a style ref; that tangles face and grade.

Need photoreal face lock, instruction wardrobe edits, or four image refs? Use V8 Edit Model and leave --niji 7 off that job. Serials, character sheets, and doujin covers stay on --niji 7.

Split it:

1. On the generate page, run a full --niji 7 prompt until the key art holds. Prompt habits match how to write better Midjourney prompts.
2. Save the four identity lines as a template; panels only change pose and setting.
3. One --sref per batch; --stylize around 120–250.
4. Open a V8 job only when you truly want photoreal or the official Editor—without --niji 7.

Bottom line: pick a model line before you lock a face

Niji 7 character consistency is still one identity block + --sref for the look. V8 Edit Model replaces --cref / Omni on the default model. It is not a second official four-ref manual for --niji 7. Know which line you are on, then decide whether the official editor is even in scope.
